That was what my mother-in-law said while I was on the foyer floor at thirty-eight weeks pregnant with twins.

In my own house, with one hand under my stomach and the other pressed against cold marble, trying to breathe through contractions that were less than three minutes apart.

The foyer smelled like lemon polish and Martha Thorne’s perfume.

It was the expensive powdery kind she sprayed too much of before church events, charity luncheons, and shopping trips where she liked sales associates to know she expected to be remembered.

That morning, the scent made me nauseous.

My shirt clung to my back with sweat.

I had seen that look on both of them before.

It was the look they gave cashiers who moved too slowly, waitresses who forgot extra lemon, and me whenever I asked for help.
