He Gave His Wife’s Car To His Mother. Her Father’s Text Ended Dinner-nga9999

I arrived at my parents’ monthly family dinner in a taxi, and the first thing my father noticed was not my dress, my late arrival, or the cold air following me through the front door.

The porch light was on, and through the dining room window I could see the little American flag my mother kept near the front steps shifting in the wind.

I remember the smell of pot roast and candle wax.

I remember the crunch of gravel under my shoes.

Jason’s SUV was there.

My cousin’s Mercedes was there.

The space where my Civic should have been felt like a missing tooth.

I sat down and reached for my napkin.
