I came home two days early with a bottle of red wine on the passenger seat and a white bakery box of almond cookies balanced beside it.

That was the part I kept thinking about later.

I had been away at a transportation conference that was supposed to run until Sunday morning, but the final session wrapped before lunch on Friday, and by 5:18 p.m. I was pulling into our driveway under a warm, tired sky.

The little American flag Sarah kept near the porch rail lifted once in the breeze and dropped again.

I remember that because everything else after it felt like somebody had torn the world down the middle.

I sat there for a second before getting out, looking at our house the way a man looks at something he has spent his life paying for, repairing, painting, defending, and coming home to.

The front flower bed needed trimming.

The mailbox still leaned slightly to the right because Michael had backed into it when he was sixteen and I never did get it perfectly straight again.

The garage light was on, even though the sun had not fully gone down.

It all looked normal.

That was the lie the house told me first.

I carried the wine and cookies up the walkway, already imagining Sarah’s face when she saw me.

We had been married long enough that surprises had become small things.

A clean kitchen.

Her favorite cookies.

A hand on the back of her neck while she stood at the sink.

Twenty-eight years does not always look like roses and speeches.

Sometimes it looks like remembering the exact bakery box your wife likes after a long week.

I opened the screen door, and it gave that same familiar scrape along the frame.

The house smelled like lemon cleaner.

Sarah used it when she was nervous or when company had overstayed their welcome.

Under that smell was something metallic.
