I found my 8-year-old daughter unconscious inside our open doorway before my suitcase stopped rolling.

Her backpack lay open beside her, spilling homework sheets, a purple folder, and the little silver airport keychain I had bought her three days earlier during my business trip.

She was still holding it.

That detail broke something in me before anything else did.

She had been waiting for me with the thing I promised to bring home.
