I found my daughter behind a closed pharmacy after midnight, and for a moment I honestly thought my mind had made a mistake.

The pharmacy lights were off except for one buzzing sign in the window.

Every few seconds, it flickered over her face and showed me another piece of what had happened to her.

The hollow cheeks.

The cracked lips.

The hair stuck to her skin.

The wedding ring tied to a string around her neck.

That ring bothered me before I even knew why.

It looked less like jewelry than evidence.

“Anna,” I whispered.

She stirred, and for one impossible second I saw the seven-year-old girl who used to fall asleep on my shoulder during thunderstorms.

Then her eyes opened.

Shame reached them first.

Recognition came after.

“Dad?”

That word broke something in me so cleanly I almost heard it.

I knelt beside her without caring about the dirty pavement, the smell of gasoline, or the two people who slowed down and then kept walking as if my daughter were part of the sidewalk.

“What happened?” I asked.

She tried to sit up, but her body moved like it had been out of strength for days.
