I came home two days earlier than anyone expected with red wine in the passenger seat and almond cookies in a white bakery box.

At 5:18 p.m. on Friday, I pulled into our driveway and sat there for one second with the engine ticking softly.

The front porch looked the same.

The mailbox still leaned slightly to the right because I had been saying for three months that I would fix it on Saturday.

Inside the house, I expected the smell of lemon cleaner, Sarah’s hand lotion, maybe the pot of coffee she sometimes made too late in the afternoon.

I carried the bakery box under one arm and the wine in my other hand.
