He Came Back With A New Wife. The Driveway Question Ruined Him-mdue

My husband announced his new marriage at 2:47 in the morning, like seven years of my life could be ended with a glowing phone screen and a sentence he probably thought sounded brave.

The blanket across my lap still held the rough heat of the dryer, and the whole house smelled closed up, stale, and tired.

I had fallen asleep on the couch because I had been waiting for Michael to call from his company training.

He had told me he would be out of town for three days.

He said the hotel coffee was awful.

He said the meetings were endless.

He said he missed our bed.

I did not call him.

I did not throw the phone.

I did not give him the satisfaction of hearing my voice break.

I sat in the dark living room and felt something inside me settle into place.

Seven years of marriage fit on a screen lit up at 2:47.

The house was mine before Michael.

I bought it with my own credit, my own down payment, and years of careful work as an accountant for a regional dairy supplier, the kind of work where you learn that numbers do not care how charming someone is.
