At 6:12 on a Saturday morning, Emily Hayes stood on the porch with everything she owned in one suitcase.

The air smelled like diesel, cold hay, and the kind of dust that never really leaves a ranch.

Michael saw it and curled his mouth like even that offended him.

“Still carrying that old woman’s scribbles?” he said.

Emily said nothing.

Silence had been her safest tool for years.

Michael had taught everyone in the house that answering him was disrespect, but not answering him was guilt.

There was no right door in that kind of home.
