At that hour, no sound is innocent.

Outside my little ranch house, wind scraped leaves across the driveway and rattled the mailbox flag near the road.

The blue glow of my phone lit the ceiling, and before I even saw the name, my chest knew.

“Grandma,” he whispered.

That one word took sixteen years off him.

He was not the lanky high school kid with earbuds in his pocket and a driver’s permit tucked behind his phone case.

He was seven again, standing on my porch after his mother’s funeral, trying so hard not to cry that his whole face shook.

I sat straighter.

His breathing came in little pieces.

By 2:51 a.m., I was dressed.
