The phone rang at 2:47 a.m., and Ellen Stone knew before she touched it that no ordinary call came at that hour.

The bedroom was cold enough that the floor stung through her socks.

The radiator clicked in the corner with its old metal complaint, and outside her little ranch house, the wind scraped dead leaves across the driveway in long, dry whispers.

Her phone lit the ceiling blue.

Then her grandson’s name appeared on the screen.

Ethan.

She answered before the second ring finished.

“Grandma…”

The word was barely there.

Thin.

Broken.

Ellen sat up fast, one hand already reaching for the lamp.

“Ethan? Where are you?”

There was a pause, and in that pause she heard background noise that did not belong to a bedroom, a school gym, or a friend’s house.

A radio crackled.

A chair scraped.

Someone far away laughed without meaning it.

“I’m at the precinct,” Ethan whispered.

Ellen’s feet hit the floor.

“What happened?”

“Chelsea hit me with a candlestick,” he said, and his voice shook so hard the words seemed to break apart on the line. “My eyebrow is bleeding… but she told them I attacked her. She said I shoved her down the stairs. Dad believes her.”

Ellen closed her eyes once.

Not to pray.

To steady the part of herself that was grandmother before it became investigator.
