She was twelve years old.

Twelve-year-olds are supposed to come home smelling like pencil shavings, cafeteria pizza, and outside air from the school pickup line.

They are not supposed to come home with sore hands and crumpled bills on the table like evidence.

“Hey,” I said softly. “What happened?”

Mia blinked once, careful and small.

That was the first thing that scared me.

My daughter was not dramatic.

She was the kind of child who apologized when a chair bumped into her.

She was the kind of child who asked permission before taking the last cookie, even in her own kitchen.

So when she looked at me like she was choosing each word for safety, my stomach dropped.

“I just worked,” she said.

I stopped in the doorway.

“Worked where?”

“Mrs. Novak’s house,” she said. “For three hours.”

Her voice was so quiet I could hear the refrigerator hum between her words.

“She paid me $20.”
