Grandma Found a Dog Warming Kittens, Then Heard a Child Outside-mdue

They found the little dog beside the stove, covering three frozen kittens with his body.

But when the grandmother looked inside the pot, she realized they had not arrived alone that night.

The wind came down from the hill like it had a grudge against the old farmhouse.

It shoved at the tin roof, rattled the screen door, and sent loose branches scraping along the siding with a dry, steady sound.

Inside the kitchen, Emily Carter sat at the small wooden table with both hands around a chipped mug she had owned for twenty-three years.

The mug was empty.

She held it anyway because it was warm from the stove and because, after a certain age, a person learns to keep small comforts close.

The kitchen smelled like woodsmoke, onion broth, and old pine boards that had taken in too many winters.

A pot simmered on the stove, though there was not much in it.

Carrots.

Celery.

A little salt.

Enough broth to make the house smell like dinner, even if dinner itself was mostly a kindness she was performing for her own stomach.

Emily was seventy-four years old, and she had been alone long enough that the house had started to sound like another person.

The pipes groaned in the walls.

The floorboards settled after dark.

The old refrigerator clicked and hummed.

Some nights she spoke to those sounds without meaning to.

“Settle down,” she would tell the roof when the wind hit hard.

“Don’t start with me,” she would say to the furnace when it coughed before catching.

Her husband, Walter, used to laugh at that.

He had been dead almost six years.

Six years was long enough for people to stop asking how she was holding up and short enough for her to still turn her head some mornings expecting to hear his boots in the hallway.

Their farmhouse sat at the end of a gravel road, a little way outside town, past a dented mailbox, a leaning fence, and a porch where a small American flag twisted in the wind whenever the weather turned rough.
