The first thing my father saw was my mother’s handwriting.

Not the two hundred guests sitting under gold chandeliers, waiting for him to marry his dead wife’s sister.

Just Mom’s careful blue ink on the folded page Grandma Eleanor had placed on top of the black cedar box.

Dad held the letter with both hands. His cuff links flashed under the ballroom lights. For a second, he looked almost young again, like the man who used to stand in the kitchen doorway while Mom packed his lunch and kissed his cheek before work.

Then Valerie touched his arm.

“Maybe this should be private,” she said softly.

Grandma Eleanor did not blink.

“You wanted Sarah’s memory in your wedding,” she said. “Now you have it.”

The room went still in that expensive way only rich rooms can manage. No one wanted to be rude enough to move, but every face had turned. The photographer had lowered his camera to his chest. The officiant stood with his book half-open. Somewhere near the back, a champagne flute tapped against a plate and stopped.

Dad swallowed.

“Eleanor—”

“Read,” Grandma said.

Valerie’s fingers tightened around her bouquet until one white rose bent at the stem.

Dad unfolded the first page.

His voice cracked on the first word.

“Chloe.”

My name moved through the ballroom like a match being struck.

I stood beside the sweetheart table with my crutch under one arm, my wrist cast itching beneath the satin ribbon Valerie had ordered me to tie around it so it would “look less medical” in photos. The ribbon was pale gold. It had started to slip, exposing the hard white plaster underneath.

Dad stared at the page.

Then he read aloud.

“If you are hearing this, it means Eleanor decided the truth could no longer wait. I am sorry, my sweet girl. I tried to protect you from the shape of this family, and maybe that was my greatest mistake.”
