I knew something was wrong before my daughter even reached my parents’ porch.

My father stood behind her with his hands in his pockets and that patient, empty expression he always wore when he wanted everyone else to feel dramatic.

Then my daughter stepped into view.

She was 12 years old, but in that moment she looked smaller.

Her hood was pulled up around her face.

Her dance bag hung from one shoulder, the strap twisted tight in her fist.

She didn’t run to me.

She didn’t shout “Mom” and throw herself into my arms.

She didn’t start telling me about practice or homework or some tiny middle-school disaster that would usually take fifteen minutes to explain.

She just stood there.

“Sarah,” my mother said brightly. “She’s just tired. Big week.”

My daughter hugged me with stiff arms.

I looked at my parents over the top of her head.

“What happened?”

My mother’s smile held steady.

I believed the first half for about half a second.
