It was 12:43 a.m. when David Miller’s phone started vibrating on the nightstand.

At first, he thought it was a wrong number.

The bedroom was dark, the house was cold, and the only sound before that buzzing had been the old furnace clicking through the vent.

His six-year-old granddaughter never called after bedtime.

For a second, there were only sobs.

“Grandpa,” she cried, “Mom’s on the kitchen floor. There’s blood. She says the baby is coming. Dad got mad and hit her in the stomach and left.”

David’s feet hit the floor before his mind had fully caught up.

“Where is your mom right now?”

“In the kitchen. She’s crying. She told me to call 911.”

“Did you call?”

“Yes. The lady said the ambulance is coming.”

David closed his eyes for half a second, just long enough to keep his voice steady.

“Good girl. Listen to me, Emma. Stay away from the blood, but stay where your mom can hear you. Tell her Grandpa is coming.”

“Is she going to die?”

The question landed in his chest harder than any blow.

David had spent thirty years as a diesel mechanic, working under trucks in weather so cold his fingers went numb inside his gloves.

He had seen roadside wrecks.

He had seen men who thought they were tough cry like children after metal folded around them.

But nothing in his life had prepared him for that tiny voice asking whether her mother was about to die.
