The door at St. Catherine’s Group Home locked behind Sarah Connolly at 2:17 on a Tuesday afternoon.

It was not a dramatic sound.

It was only a latch clicking into place.

But to Sarah, it sounded like the last page of a file being closed.

Mrs. Brennan stood inside the glass door, one hand still on the knob, her pale cardigan neat, her lips pulled into the thin smile she used whenever she wanted cruelty to look like policy.

Sarah had a black duffel bag, a manila folder, a bus schedule, and no address that belonged to her.

The folder held her birth certificate, her Social Security card, and a photocopy of an intake form from when she was three weeks old.

The duffel held two pairs of jeans, a hoodie, running shoes with a split seam, a toothbrush, and the only photograph she owned of herself before age ten.

“The bus runs every hour,” Mrs. Brennan said.

Sarah nodded.

She had already learned that nodding was safer than speaking.

Then Mrs. Brennan let her eyes drop to the duffel.

“No family came because nobody wanted the burden.”

For one second, Sarah’s throat closed around every answer she had never been allowed to give.

But eighteen in the system meant old enough to be abandoned with paperwork.

So she picked up the duffel.

She walked to the bus stop.

And she did not let Mrs. Brennan see her cry.

The ride into Boston smelled like wet wool, old brakes, and coffee from paper cups.

Sarah sat with the duffel between her knees and the folder pressed flat against her stomach, as if the documents inside might float away if she loosened her hands.

She had a plan, if fear could be called a plan.

Find a job before the week ended.

At South Station, Sarah stepped off the bus and stood under the departure board.
