I was halfway through my chicken parmesan when my father leaned across the red-checkered tablecloth and smiled like he had been waiting all night to say something clever.

The restaurant smelled like garlic bread, hot marinara, and the sharp lemon cleaner they used on the tables before the dinner rush.

Warm yellow light hung over our booth in a circle, brightening the forks, the water glasses, and the little candle Kennedy kept moving away from her sleeve.

“So, Hunter,” Dad said, still smiling, “are you enjoying the $3,000?”

My knife stopped against the crust of melted cheese.

For one second, I thought it was a joke.

My dad had a habit of making dry comments with no setup and laughing before anyone else understood where the humor was supposed to be.

But my mother did not laugh.

Her fork stopped halfway to her mouth.

A ribbon of marinara slipped from the pasta and landed back on her plate with a soft, wet sound.

That was when I knew something was wrong.

“What money?” I asked.

Dad looked at Mom first.

His smile stayed in place for half a second too long, then began to disappear from his face.

“Wait,” he said slowly. “You didn’t tell him?”

Mom set her fork down carefully, like any sudden movement might shatter the table.

“Honey,” she said, looking at me instead of him, “this isn’t really the place.”

The restaurant kept moving around us.

Plates clattered behind the kitchen door.

Someone laughed near the bar.

A waiter passed behind my chair with the smell of toasted garlic and cologne following him.

But inside our booth, everything tightened.
