Dad Found His Missing Daughter in a Backyard Cage, Then Saw the Window Move-mdue

The custody schedule sat folded in the cup holder.

I remember both things because my mind kept grabbing onto ordinary details, as if ordinary details could keep the fear from becoming real.

Every other Friday, Emily ran out before I even made it all the way up the curb.

One shoelace would usually be untied.

She would climb into the passenger seat and ask, “What are we having for dinner?” before she even shut the door.

No little face in the window.

No door opening.

It went straight to voicemail.

I waited ten minutes, then called Sarah.

No answer.

I texted both of them.

Nothing.
