Michael knew something was wrong before he even stepped all the way into his parents’ house.

The television was too loud.

The living room had that Saturday-evening clutter of kids who had been fed sugar and handed toys: doll clothes on the rug, potato chips crushed into the carpet, a donut box half-open on the coffee table.

But the kitchen sounded different.

Water ran hard against stainless steel.

A plate hit another plate with a sharp clatter.

Then his mother’s voice cut through everything.

“Wipe it right, girl. You’re not here to decorate.”

Michael stopped with his keys still in his hand.

He had spent the last three hours in a meeting that should have ended in forty minutes.

His shirt was stuck to his back from rushing across the parking lot, and the paper coffee cup he had carried all day was empty and soft around the rim.

He had been thinking about invoices, childcare, the gas bill, and whether he had enough energy to make dinner when he got home.

Then he heard his daughter.

He heard a small sniff, swallowed fast.

Emma was standing on a blue plastic step stool at the sink.

She was six years old.

Her hoodie sleeves were wet almost to her shoulders, her little fingers red from dish soap, her cheeks blotchy from crying.

A tower of greasy plates sat in front of her.

On the counter, a pan still had chicken skin stuck to the bottom.

In the living room, her cousins Olivia and Megan were sitting on the rug with new dolls, a toy cart, chips, and donuts.
