Michael knew something was wrong before he saw his daughter.

It was the sound.

Not one sound exactly, but the wrong combination of sounds coming from his parents’ suburban house on a Saturday afternoon.

The TV was loud in the living room, all bright cartoon music and canned laughter bouncing off the walls.

There was the sugary smell of donuts sitting open on the coffee table, the salty smell of chips spilled into the carpet, and the warm, tired smell of a house that had been closed up all day.

Then, from the kitchen, came running water.

Plates clattered hard against the sink.

A woman’s voice cut through it.

“Cut it out, girl. You’re not here to look cute.”

Michael stopped in the entryway with his keys still hooked around one finger.

He had come straight from a long Saturday meeting, the kind that should have ended before lunch but somehow dragged into the middle of the afternoon.

His white dress shirt was stuck to his back.

His coffee had gone cold in the family SUV outside.

His head was full of numbers, deadlines, and the small dull panic that comes from knowing you promised your kid you would be early and then failed.

But the second he heard his mother’s voice, all of that disappeared.

He moved toward the kitchen.

Three steps was all it took.

There was Emma.

His 6-year-old daughter was standing on a blue plastic step stool at the sink, sleeves soaked almost to her shoulders, fingers red from dish soap, cheeks puffy from crying.

She was scrubbing a glass with both hands, slow and careful, as if the whole world depended on her not dropping it.

Beside her sat a tower of greasy plates.

The counter was wet.

A fork had been pushed close to the edge.

A sponge, too big for her hand, sagged in the sink like something exhausted.
