Fifteen minutes before her wedding, Emily found her parents sitting on two black folding chairs beside the service aisle.

Not at the honor table.

Not near the front.

They were tucked beside a white tent pole where caterers passed with trays, close enough to the back path that every time the kitchen door opened, warm air rushed over them carrying the smell of butter, coffee, and roasted chicken.

Her father, David, was looking at the floor.

Her mother, Olivia, was holding her navy purse with both hands.

Emily stood at the edge of the garden tent in her wedding dress and felt the whole afternoon tilt.

Only an hour earlier, the bridal room had smelled like hairspray and white roses.

Her cousin Sarah had been fixing the back of her veil while the string quartet warmed up outside.

The pearls in Emily’s ears had belonged to her grandmother, and every time they brushed her neck, she had told herself to breathe.

This was supposed to be the day everything softened.

The day the old money worries and family embarrassment and awkward dinners with Michael’s mother finally stopped mattering.

The day Emily became part of something stable.

Then Sarah opened the door without knocking.

Her face was pale.

“You need to come with me,” she said.

Emily looked at her in the mirror.

“What happened?”

Sarah’s mouth opened, then closed.

“Just come.”

Emily lifted the front of her dress with both hands and followed her down the hallway that led from the bridal suite to the reception lawn.

The hallway smelled like carpet cleaner and fresh paint.

Somewhere ahead, glasses clinked.
