The bride thought she could treat her mother-in-law like dead weight on her big day, until the man who paid for almost the entire wedding decided to draw a line she could not ignore.

“My wife knows exactly where she belongs,” Ashley said, and two seconds later she shoved Sarah into the mud in front of 200 guests.

For one breath, the whole reception seemed to disappear.

The string quartet near the fountain kept dragging its bows across the song, but I could barely hear it.

The summer air smelled like cut grass, champagne, watered soil, and too many flowers sitting too long in the sun.

All I saw was my wife on the ground.

Sarah was sixty-one.

She had spent three weeks looking for a dress that would not offend anyone.

That was the kind of woman she was.

She worried about taking up too much space even at her own son’s wedding.

The dress was ivory, simple, soft at the sleeves, and modest enough that she had stood in front of our bedroom mirror and asked me twice if it was too much.

“It’s beautiful,” I told her.

She had smiled like she did not quite believe me.

Now that same dress was streaked with black mud from shoulder to hem.

Her hands were dirty.

Her hair had clumps of wet grass in it.

Her wedding ring was nearly hidden beneath the mud on her finger.

Ashley did not move to help her.

My son’s new wife simply adjusted her veil, turned away, and walked back toward David as if she had stepped around a fallen chair instead of shoving his mother onto the ground.

David put his arm around Ashley’s waist.

He leaned toward her ear.

He said something I could not hear.

Then Ashley laughed.

That laugh was what broke something in me.
