I arrived at my wedding venue to find it locked.

Dark.

Empty.

Three days earlier, my in-laws had canceled it without telling me, and by the time I found out, two hundred guests were already on the road.

The wind was the first thing I noticed when the car door opened.

It slapped the veil against my mouth and pushed through the seams of my ivory gown like it had a personal grudge against weddings.

The second thing I noticed was the silence.

Blackwood Estate should have been humming by then.

There should have been music warming up inside, catering staff crossing the gravel drive, florists carrying arrangements through the side entrance, somebody waving at the car because brides are not supposed to wonder whether they are at the correct address.

Instead, the long brick building was dark.

The front drive was empty.

The iron gate was chained shut.

For a second, my brain tried to be kind to me.

Maybe I was early.

Maybe the staff had parked behind the house.

Maybe the gate code had failed and somebody was on the way with bolt cutters and an apology.

Then Marcus from the catering company walked toward me with a folder in his hand and a face that told me the truth before he said a word.

“Eleanor,” he said, and even my name sounded like bad news.

He handed me the contract.

Across the front page was a red stamp.

VOIDED.

The letters sat there like they had been waiting for me.

I remember the paper shaking slightly, though I am still not sure whether it was his hand or mine.

“I got the cancellation notice Thursday night,” Marcus said. “I thought it was a system error until the gate code failed this morning.”
