Bride Finds Her Daughter Missing Seconds Before Saying I Do-mdue

I was standing at the altar, only seconds away from saying, “I do,” when I realized my daughter’s chair was empty.

Emily was seven years old.

For a few seconds, my mind refused to understand what my eyes were showing me.

There was the chair in the front row.

There was the white bow tied carefully to the back of it.

There was the little cream name card placed on the seat, printed in the neat calligraphy I had paid extra for because I wanted everything to feel gentle that day.

EMILY.

Seven letters.

Seven years old.

And no little girl sitting there.

The garden smelled like roses, hairspray, and cut grass warming under the afternoon sun.

A violin kept playing that soft wedding music people choose because it is supposed to make ordinary air feel holy.

The judge’s voice moved on without me, steady and official, as if the words still had somewhere to go.

Two hundred guests sat facing forward with programs folded across their laps.

Somewhere behind me, someone gave a small happy sniffle.

My whole body went cold.

Only thirty minutes earlier, Emily had stood on tiptoe to hug me around the waist.

Her flower girl dress scratched softly against my skirt, and one of her braids brushed my bare arm as she whispered that she had a surprise for me after the ceremony.

She had been proud of that secret.

She kept patting the tiny flower girl purse at her side like it contained diamonds.

I asked her if she wanted me to guess.

She giggled and shook her head.

“After,” she said. “After you say it.”

I had kissed the top of her head and promised I would wait.

Now her chair was empty.

My fingers tightened around my bouquet until a thorn pressed into the soft place near my thumb.

The stems felt damp.

The ribbon around them had gone slick against my palm.

I tried to breathe, but the air felt too thin, like the whole garden had been covered with glass.

The judge asked me something.

I heard my name.

I heard Ethan shift beside me.

I did not answer.

Instead, I stared at that empty chair while a truth I had spent months pushing away finally stood up inside me.
