Bride Finds A Secret Move-In Plan Hours Before Her Wedding-mdue

8:12 a.m.

The bridal suite smelled like hairspray, warm metal, and the overwatered roses sitting in a glass vase by the hotel window.

Emily Carter was sitting in front of a mirror with her veil half-pinned into her hair when Linda Bennett placed a stack of documents on her lap.

Not handed.

Placed.

Like Emily had already agreed to receive them.

A red pen sat across the top page.

Linda wore a burgundy dress that looked more formal than the bride’s mother’s outfit, and her gold bracelet clicked against the glass coffee table every time she moved her wrist.

Click.

Click.

Click.

The sound made Emily’s shoulders tighten before she even read the title.

“Post-Marriage Co-Residence And Family Property Arrangement.”

That was what the first page said.

The words were stiff enough to belong in an office, not in a bridal suite where a makeup artist still had an open palette on the counter and the florist was waiting downstairs.

Emily looked down at the first clause.

It stated that she voluntarily agreed to add Michael Bennett, her groom, as a co-owner of Unit 402 after the wedding.

Unit 402 was not a mansion.

It was not even a large apartment.

It was fifty-two square meters on the top floor of an older building, the kind of place where the elevator rattled on rainy days and the hallway lights hummed when they were about to burn out.

But it was hers.

Eight years of paychecks had gone into it.

Her mother had sold the sewing shop she had run for most of Emily’s childhood and put $180,000 toward the down payment.

After Emily’s father died, the survivor benefit booklet had stayed folded in a drawer until the day Emily used what was left of it to secure the home.

Every number carried a face.

Every receipt had a memory attached to it.

Michael had not paid one dollar toward the purchase.

Linda smoothed the side of her dress and said, “Emily, sign it.”

Emily did not answer.

Linda continued as if silence meant agreement.

“The MC needs you downstairs at 9:30 for rehearsal. The reception starts at 11:18. We still have time if you sign now. We don’t need this to interfere with the good hour.”

The makeup artist glanced up once, then looked quickly back down at her brushes.

Sarah, Emily’s bridesmaid and oldest friend, stood near the wall holding the bridal bouquet with both hands.

The stems were wrapped in satin ribbon.
