Bride Finds A Hidden Plan For Her Apartment Hours Before The Wedding-mdue

At 8:12 that morning, I was still supposed to become Daniel Parker’s wife.

The bridal suite on the third floor of the hotel smelled like hairspray, setting powder, and the paper cups of coffee the bridesmaids had abandoned along the vanity.

My veil was only half pinned.

One silver clip still hung from the stylist’s mouth when my future mother-in-law, Linda Parker, walked in carrying a stack of papers.

She wore a wine-red dress that looked more like a victory flag than wedding attire.

Her makeup was heavier than mine.

The gold bracelet on her wrist clicked against the glass coffee table as she placed the papers across my lap.

Then she laid a red pen on top.

Not blue.

Not black.

Red.

Like the signature was supposed to bleed.

‘Emily,’ she said, smiling as if she were asking me to choose a centerpiece, ‘sign this now, honey.’

The down payment held eight years of my salary.

It held $25,000 my mother got after selling her sewing shop back home.

It held money from the survivor benefits folder she kept after my father died, the folder with soft corners because she had touched it so many times and cried over it even more.

Daniel had not paid one dollar for that apartment.

He had helped pick paint colors.

That was not ownership.

Linda tapped the papers with one polished nail.

‘The MC rehearses at 9:30,’ she said. ‘The lunch begins at 11:18. We cannot miss the good time because of paperwork.’

I did not answer.

The stylist took one step backward.
