My daughter knocked on my door at 3:00 in the morning wearing her wedding dress, covered in blood.

Sofia stood under the flickering hallway light with one hand pressed against the wall and the other clutched over her stomach as if she had been holding herself together the entire way up.

Her veil was gone.

Her shoes were gone.

Pearls were still pinned in her hair, but half of them had slipped loose and hung beside her face like tiny broken promises.

The white lace at the back of her dress had been torn open.

There was blood along the bodice.

One cheek had already swollen.

Her lip was split.

Purple marks circled both arms in the shape of fingers.

I had dressed that same girl for her wedding only hours earlier.

I had buttoned the tiny buttons at the back of that dress.

I had fixed one curl that would not stay tucked behind her ear.

I had told her she looked beautiful, and she had looked at me through the mirror with that soft, nervous smile brides get when they are trying to believe happiness is finally choosing them.

Now she was standing outside my door like she had escaped something no woman should ever have to survive.

“Mom,” she whispered.

Her voice cracked so badly I almost did not recognize it.

Then her knees gave out.

I caught her before she hit the floor.

She collapsed into my arms, all satin and blood and shaking bones, and whispered the sentence that will stay inside my head for the rest of my life.

“My mother-in-law hit me forty times because I wouldn’t give her my condo.”
