The first call came at 11:57 p.m., and Gabe almost ignored it.

Rain was hammering the apartment windows so hard it sounded like somebody throwing gravel against the glass.

His coffee had gone cold beside his laptop, the kind of cold that left a bitter smell in the room, and the only thing he wanted was to finish the last work email and go to bed.

The phone buzzed again.

Unknown number.

For a few seconds, he stared at it like the screen itself could explain why anyone would call him that late.

Then he answered.

“Hello?”

Static filled his ear.

Thunder rolled somewhere beyond the building, and under it he heard a small breath break apart.

“Uncle Gabe… it’s Emily… I’m locked in. I’m hungry. Please come get me.”

The sound in his apartment seemed to vanish.

No rain.

No refrigerator hum.

No keyboard fan.

Just the voice of his six-year-old niece, thin and terrified, coming from a number he did not recognize.

“Emily?” he said, already standing. “Where are you? What happened?”

The call cut off.

He called back immediately.

Nothing.

He called again, and again, and again, until the voicemail tone started to feel like a door being shut in his face.

Then he called his parents’ house.

That was where Emily had been staying since Gabe’s younger brother, Daniel, had disappeared into a spiral the family only discussed in fragments.
