My face hit the salad plate with a wet sound that made the whole private dining room go quiet.

For a second, I could not even move.

Cold vinaigrette slid down my cheek and under my jaw.

A cherry tomato rolled off the edge of the plate, bounced once against my dress, and landed in my lap.

The room smelled like lemon dressing, candle wax, grilled steak, and Vivian’s white wine.

Somewhere near the end of the table, a fork scraped against china and then stopped.

That was the sound I remember most clearly.

Not the shove.

Not my breath catching.

The fork stopping.

Because everyone had seen it.

Vivian, my mother-in-law, sat beside my husband with her ankles crossed neatly under the table, her diamond bracelet shining every time she moved her hand.

She had nudged the back leg of my chair with the tip of her shoe while I was leaning forward to pick up my napkin.

Not hard enough to look like an attack.

Hard enough to send me straight into the plate.

Then she smiled.

“Oh, Claire,” she said, using that soft voice of hers, the one she saved for waiters and relatives she wanted to impress. “You really do need to learn how to carry yourself at the table.”

Daniel laughed.

My husband laughed.

He did not look horrified.

He did not stand up.

He did not even ask if I was okay.

He leaned back in his chair, wiped the corner of his eye, and laughed like my humiliation had arrived right on schedule with dessert.

“Claire,” he said, still smiling, “relax. Mom was teasing. Go clean up before dessert. You look ridiculous.”
