The pounding started a little after 3:00 A.M., hard enough to make the little American flag on my front porch shake against its wooden pole.

I had been asleep for maybe ninety minutes.

The house was dark, the kind of dark that makes every sound feel closer than it is.

Rain tapped hard against the siding.

The hallway floor was cold under my bare feet.

For one second, with my hand on the brass doorknob, I told myself it was a neighbor, a blown tire, some drunk stranger who had picked the wrong porch.

Then I opened the door.

The smell came first.

Wet satin.

Storm air.

Blood.

My daughter stood on my welcome mat in her wedding dress.

Emily had been a bride for twelve hours.

That morning, I had buttoned that dress with shaking fingers while she laughed at me in the mirror and told me I was going to make her cry before the ceremony even started.

I remembered the little pearl buttons.

I remembered the way she had turned sideways, nervous and glowing, and asked whether the dress made her look too serious.
