The first thing I noticed was the smell.

Not fear.

Not paperwork.

Lemon cleaner, old coffee, and rainwater tracked across my hardwood floor.

That was how ordinary it looked from the porch.

My porch light was still on even though it was only early evening, and the small flag tucked beside the front door hung damp from a storm that had moved through before I got there.

I had come home a week early from command training.

I had a duffel on my shoulder, a grocery-store cake in the back seat of my SUV, and a plan to scare my little sister half to death by walking into the kitchen and asking why she had not taken the trash out.

That was the life I wanted for five minutes.

A normal one.

Then I opened my front door and found my sister on the floor.

Rachel was curled near the edge of the kitchen tile, one arm wrapped around her middle, the other pressed over her mouth like she was trying to keep herself from making any more noise.

Her hoodie sleeves were pulled over her hands.

Her hair was stuck to her wet cheeks.

There was a pen in her fingers.

It was shaking.

My duffel dropped before I meant to let it go.

The canvas hit the hardwood with a thud that made everyone in the room look up except Victor Graves.

Victor sat on my leather sofa with one ankle crossed over his knee.

Beside him sat his wife, Linda, smooth and pale in a cream cardigan, hands folded over her purse.

On my coffee table sat stacks of bank papers, a property appraisal, closing forms, and a clean copy of the master deed to my house.

My house.

Twelve years in the Army had paid for that place.

Twelve years of sweat, deployments, training cycles, missed birthdays, cheap coffee, bad sleep, and the kind of silence that follows you home from places nobody at the grocery store wants to hear about.
