My dad smashed my jaw for “talking back,” and my mother laughed like she had been waiting all morning for somebody to do it.

The sound was not loud in a movie way.

A crack cut through the kitchen, and for one second I could smell nothing but pancake grease and burnt coffee while the tile came up under my hands.

My father stood over me with his chest still heaving.

My mother stayed by the stove with the spatula in her hand.

My older brother, Kyle, leaned in the doorway with his phone glowing blue against his palm.

No one moved toward me.

That was always the truth of our house.

Pain only mattered if it belonged to Kyle.

I had not cursed at my father.

I had not thrown anything.

I had asked why I had to clean the entire backyard while Kyle lay across the couch in dirty sneakers, scrolling through his phone and laughing at videos.

“Why can’t he do anything around here?” I said.

One sentence.

One ordinary question.

My father heard rebellion.

My mother heard cruelty toward her favorite child.

Kyle heard opportunity.

Dad’s fist came so fast that I did not even raise my hands.

My teeth hit together.

White light flashed behind my eyes.

My breath scraped in my throat as I pushed myself up from the kitchen floor.

“That’s what you get for being useless,” Mom said.

She stepped around me with the coffee pot like I was a spill.

Dad lifted his mug again.

“Maybe now you’ll learn to keep that gutter mouth shut.”

Kyle smiled.

He did not have to say anything.

He rarely did.

That had been his talent since childhood.

He could sigh, complain, hint, whine, and stand back while our parents did the rest.

When we were kids, he broke a window with a baseball and told Mom I had distracted him.
