The first thing I remember is the sound.

Not the pain.

Not my mother’s laugh.

My father’s fist met my face with a crack so sharp it seemed to split the kitchen air in two.

My teeth snapped together, my vision flashed white, and the yellow light over the breakfast table smeared into a long bright streak above me.

Then my palms hit the chipped tile.

The floor was cold in some places and sticky in others, the way that kitchen always was no matter how many times I scrubbed it.

Something warm moved under my hand.

When I lifted my fingers, they were red.

For one second, nobody said anything.

My father stood over me with his chest moving slowly, like he had just finished a chore.

My mother stood at the stove with the coffee pot in one hand and the spatula in the other, her lips already curling before the laugh came.

Kyle leaned in the doorway with his phone glowing against his palm.

He was my older brother, although older had never meant responsible in our house.

It meant protected.

It meant excused.

It meant everyone else rearranged themselves around whatever Kyle needed that week.

Mom laughed first.

“That’s what you get for being useless,” she said.

She stepped around me as if I were something she might track through the kitchen.

Dad looked down at me and said, “Maybe now you’ll learn to keep that gutter mouth shut.”

That was the crime.
