My husband slapped me in front of his whole family and shouted that he wanted a divorce before the sun had even come up.

He liked a full table, a quiet room, and people who knew when to laugh at his jokes even when they were not funny.

That morning, he had all of it.

His mother, Teresa, sat near his right hand with her pearl necklace resting perfectly against her sweater.

His sister Ashley had already complained twice that the coffee was not hot enough, even though I had brewed it twenty minutes earlier.

His uncle David had taken the chair closest to the doorway, the way men do when they want everybody to notice how comfortable they are.

Sixteen pairs of eyes sat around that table.

None of them looked at the kitchen.

None of them looked at the dirty pans cooling in the sink.

I had been awake since 3:07 a.m.

The house was quiet then, except for the refrigerator humming and the old pipes tapping behind the laundry room wall.

I had moved through the kitchen in socks so nobody would accuse me of “making noise for attention.”

Coffee grounds. Butter. Bacon grease. Toast. Orange juice. The sharp little burn of dish soap on my hands.

All of it mixed into that familiar smell of a woman working before anyone else has to admit work is happening.

Michael’s family called it hosting.

I called it surviving the weekend.

When I married him four years earlier, he had made himself sound lonely, ambitious, and misunderstood.

He said his family had expectations he never asked for.
