After He Locked Her in the Basement, One Call Changed Everything-Quieen

The way women whisper about in parking lots and office bathrooms when they do not want to admit how long they have been lonely inside a house that looks fine from the street.

I had a paper coffee cup in one hand and Evan’s favorite takeout order in the other.

The cup was warm against my fingers.

The bag smelled like fries, grilled onions, and the sharp lemon cleaner the hostess always used on the front stand.

The corner booth at La Mesa Grill was tucked behind a half wall near the bar.

It had always been one of Evan’s favorite spots because he could see the whole room without being in the middle of it.
