I had been riding north from Texas for forty-three days when I saw Catherine Morrison trying to lift a fence post alone, my boots full of holes, my horse thirsty, and no place left where I knew how to explain myself.
The post was taller than she was, slick with old rain and new blood, and she had both hands wrapped around it like stubbornness could do the work of another body.
Then Catherine slipped, caught herself, and made a sound I had heard on cattle drives when a horse went down and still tried to stand.
She turned on me so fast I almost smiled.

“Elias,” she said.

Elias looked at me first.

He smiled and laid a folded deed on the table.

Porter said Richard feared his brother would try to take the ranch from Catherine the moment grief made her tired.
The clerk had no horse fit for the muddy road that week.
He told me if I found Catherine under pressure, I should bring her in before she signed anything.
At the time, I thought it was none of my business.
Then Elias put that deed on her table.
I looked at Catherine.

Her face went white.
Elias moved toward the door.

“If she signs,” I said, “she loses it now.”
For a few seconds, no one moved.
Then Catherine wrapped a rag around her palm, picked up Richard’s Bible, and walked past her brother-in-law like he was a post she had already decided to lift.
I went with her.
Elias followed hard, dust rising behind his horse the whole way to town.
The county office smelled of paper, lamp oil, and old rain in wool coats.
Porter looked from Catherine’s bandaged hand to Elias’s red face and said nothing until he had unlocked the iron box beneath his desk.
Inside was the letter.
The wax seal had Richard Morrison’s mark pressed into it.
Porter broke it in front of all of us.
He read every line out loud.
Richard had left the ranch, the stock, the well, and every improvement to Catherine alone.
He wrote that his brother Elias had already tried to borrow against the property once without consent.
He wrote that no deed signed by Catherine under threat, grief, or pressure should be honored unless she confirmed it freely in front of the county clerk.
Elias reached for the paper.
Porter pulled it away.
“Your hand does not belong on this record.”
The crooked deputy shifted his weight and found great interest in the floorboards.
Then Porter opened the ledger.
There was the matching entry, dated before Richard’s death, witnessed by two men who had since moved east but left sworn marks behind.
Catherine stood so still I could hear her breathing.
The woman who had been outnumbered on her own land was watching the room count differently for the first time in years.
“Record that I refuse the deed,” she said.
Her voice did not tremble.
Porter dipped his pen.
Elias called her ungrateful.
Catherine turned to him then, and whatever grief had bent her shoulders did not leave, exactly, but it changed shape.
“No,” she said. “I am done being tired for your convenience.”

“Samuel.”
