The call came into the Springfield emergency line during the kind of hour when a city seems to be holding its breath.

Not asleep, not awake.

Claire Johnson had been working dispatch for ten years, and she had learned that panic usually arrived with noise.

A crash in the background.

A barking dog.

A husband shouting from another room.

A car horn stuck after impact.

A smoke alarm screaming while somebody coughed into the phone and begged for an ambulance.

Panic wanted to be heard.

Danger did not always give itself away that easily.

Sometimes danger came as a pause.

Sometimes it came as a child trying not to cry.

That night, the dispatch room smelled like burnt coffee and printer toner, with a faint heat rising off the monitors lined up in front of each station.

Claire had one hand around a paper cup that had gone cold and the other resting over her keyboard when the line opened.

At first, nothing answered her.

A child’s breathing.

Claire straightened in her chair, and the wheels made a soft click against the floor.

“Hello?” she said, more gently this time. “This is 911. Can you talk to me?”
