Ethan Walker had learned a long time ago that quiet places were rarely empty.

The mountains above Briar Ridge looked peaceful from a distance, especially in October, when the pines held their dark green and the grass turned pale under frost.

Five years after coming home, Ethan still listened for what other people did not hear.

He heard a branch tapping against another branch.

He heard water dragging itself under a thin lid of ice.

Ranger was a six-year-old German shepherd with one torn ear, a gray muzzle coming in too early, and eyes that seemed to understand things people could not say out loud.

He had been a military working dog before an injury ended his service.

Ethan had signed the adoption papers at a small office with bad coffee, fluorescent lights, and a clerk who kept saying Ranger was lucky.

Ethan remembered looking down at the dog, seeing that torn ear tilt toward him, and thinking the clerk had it backward.

Ranger was not lucky Ethan found him.

Ethan was lucky Ranger had agreed to come home.

Every morning before sunrise, they walked the old logging road behind Ethan’s cabin.
