The front office froze around that sentence. The secretary’s fingers hovered over her keyboard. A counselor stopped with a coffee cup in both hands. A teacher at the copier stared at the glass plate as though paper jams had become urgent.

Nobody moved.

A female officer spoke with Valentina in Elaine Brooks’s office. She asked slowly, softly, and without pressure. Valentina gave almost nothing. After several minutes, she looked at the carpet and whispered, “It doesn’t hurt anymore.”
