Rain was the first thing I remember from that night.

Not the kind that makes people poetic.

Cold rain.

Hard rain.

Rain that tapped against the canvas roof of the operations tent like it wanted to be let in.

I was five thousand miles from Virginia, sitting on the edge of a cot with one boot tied and the other still loose, holding a paper cup of coffee that had gone bitter long before I picked it up.

The generator outside kept humming.

Somebody down the row laughed at a card game.

Then my phone lit up with my mother’s name.

She never called at that hour.

My mother believed bad news should wait until morning if morning had any chance of making it smaller.

She was the kind of woman who paid bills in envelopes, wrote appointment times on a calendar by the refrigerator, and kept a small American flag on the porch because my father had bought it before he got sick.

Her name in the middle of that rain made every ordinary sound in the tent disappear.

I answered with a smile already forming because some part of me was still a son before I was a soldier.

“Mom?”

At first, she only breathed.

Thin.

Shaky.

Wrong.

“Blake,” she whispered.

I stood up so fast the coffee tipped over and spread across the plywood by my boots.

“What happened?”

She did not answer right away.

That silence did more to me than a scream could have.
