I never told my daughter’s school I was a judge.

To them, I was just another polite single mom who signed forms on time, packed lunches, answered emails, and apologized when work made me two minutes late to pickup.

Easy to smile at.

That was what they thought until the Tuesday afternoon I found my eight-year-old daughter locked inside a dark school supply closet.

And when the principal threatened to destroy her future if I spoke up, I realized something colder than anger.

They still had no idea who they were talking to.

The hearing had ended early that day.

That almost never happened.

My calendar was usually stacked so tightly that every hour felt borrowed from the next one, but just after four o’clock, I found myself walking out of the courthouse with my case notes tucked under one arm and the pale spring light still sitting over the parking lot.

Early enough to surprise Emily at pickup.

She loved surprises when they came from me.

A paper coffee cup of hot chocolate when court ran long and the day had been too hard for both of us.

I drove to her school with the windows cracked just enough to let in the smell of cut grass and warm pavement.

Nothing about that drive warned me.

The school looked normal from the outside.
