At 4:18 p.m. on a Tuesday, Sarah Miller walked into St. Regina Academy with her work bag on one shoulder and a paper coffee cup gone cold in her hand.

She was not supposed to be there yet.

A hearing at county family court had ended sooner than expected, and for once the drive across town had not trapped her behind the school pickup line.

She imagined Sofia waiting near the front door with her pink backpack, one knee sock sliding down, and the blue hair bow that never survived a full school day.

Instead, the hallway smelled like chlorine, wet paper towels, and a floor mopped too fast.

The fluorescent lights buzzed above the lockers.

There were no children running.

No teachers calling names.

No laughter bouncing off the walls.

Sarah slowed before she reached the front desk.

That silence was the first warning.

The receptionist did not look up when Sarah said Sofia’s name.

She slid a clipboard across the counter and tapped the pickup sheet.

Sarah kept the pen in her hand.

“A routine what?”

“Lockdown,” the woman repeated, eyes still on her screen. “Behavioral correction. Ms. Lane handled it.”

At work, Sarah had listened to parents describe the worst moments of their lives.

She knew the difference between anger and danger.

Anger rushed.

Danger went quiet.

“Where is my daughter?” she asked.
