“Dad… come get me, please… Jason hit me again.”

The butter was still snapping in the skillet when Michael heard his daughter say those words.

It was Easter Sunday, the kind of bright American morning when neighbors backed SUVs out of driveways, kids carried pastel baskets, and every porch on the block seemed to have somebody’s mother calling from behind a screen door.

Michael stood before he realized he had moved.

“What happened? Where are you?”

“I think something inside me broke this time.”

The chair behind him tipped over and hit the floor.

The sound was loud in his little kitchen, louder than the skillet, louder than the radio, louder than every warning he had ignored because Emily kept telling him she could handle it.

“Emily,” he said, forcing his voice not to shake, “is Jason there?”

There was a sharp click.
