The afternoon Michael Roberts came to collect what he was owed, the heat had pressed David Miller’s ranch flat and quiet.

Michael parked his old pickup near the fence and looked once at the empty chicken coop, the green-ringed water trough, and the front steps splitting under years of neglect.

This was not a ranch being repaired.

“Dad,” Ethan asked from the brown mare, “do you think he’ll have them ready?”

Michael looked at his 11-year-old son.

Ethan was trying to sit tall, trying to look like a man before childhood had finished with him.

“He signed the work order,” Michael said.

In the truck cab, Emma slept against a folded sweatshirt with a blue ribbon loose in her hair.

Michael had spent three months on David’s back pasture.

He had stretched wire until his palms split, sunk fence posts into stubborn ground, and marked every finished section on the handwritten work order David had signed on a Wednesday at 3:18 p.m.

The debt was simple.
