I almost turned the car around three times before I reached Mark’s parents’ house in Fairfax, Virginia.

That is the part Jenna never understood afterward.

She thought the hardest part was what happened at the table.

The hardest part was choosing to walk into a normal room when normal had not felt safe to me in years.

Fairfax looked harmless that evening.

The lawns were trimmed clean.

The porch flags moved softly in the warm air.

A basketball hoop leaned over the end of the driveway like something from a childhood nobody had to leave behind.

Sprinklers ticked across darkening grass, and every house on the street looked bright enough to convince a stranger that pain only happened somewhere else.

I sat in my car with the engine running and both hands on the wheel.

The windshield fogged faintly at the edges.

My Navy blouse smelled like starch and laundry soap.

My palms smelled like old coffee from the cup I had gripped too hard the whole drive over.

I had told her yes.

My sister Jenna was thirty-one, but when she loved somebody, she went soft around the edges in a way that made her look younger.

When we were kids, she used to tuck notes into my backpack before big tests.

When I shipped out the first time, she mailed cookies that arrived broken and stale, and I ate every crumb because she had written my name on the box in purple marker.

When I came home different, she pretended not to stare at how long I checked exits.
