They were white and flat and merciless, the kind of lights that make every face look washed out, every lie look cheap, every hand look like it has touched something it should not have touched.

The ER smelled like antiseptic, old coffee, and plastic tubing.

Lily lay under a thin hospital blanket with an IV in her arm and a monitor counting her heartbeat in small green flashes.

She was six.

Six years old, with freckles across her nose and a stubborn little chin she had inherited from me, though Mark always claimed she got it from his side of the family.
