Rain had been falling for hours when the front door of the station opened.

Officer Ramirez looked up from the incident log at 11:58 p.m.

He had been working the night shift long enough to know the sounds of that building.

The radio murmuring from dispatch.

The buzz of the fluorescent lights.

The soft squeak of the receptionist’s chair.

The wind pushing at the front doors whenever a patrol car passed outside.

He knew the tired rhythm of a small American police station after midnight.

He did not know what to do with the little girl standing in the doorway.

She was soaked from the top of her head to the toes of her sneakers.

Her hair was plastered against her cheeks.

Her lips looked almost blue.

Both hands were wrapped around the handle of an old grocery cart, the kind with one wheel that never quite faces the same direction as the others.

She had pushed it through the storm.

Inside the cart was another child.

At first Ramirez thought the second girl was sleeping.

Then he saw the way she was curled in on herself.

Then he saw the hand pressed against her belly.

Then he saw the shape under the wet dress, the strange tight swelling that made his body move before his mind had finished asking questions.
