The call entered the Cedar Ridge emergency center during the hour when the whole building usually sounded tired.

It was not night anymore, but it did not feel like morning either.

The fluorescent lights hummed above the dispatch stations, turning every coffee cup, file folder, and pale computer screen into something washed out and sleepless.

Cold coffee sat in a paper cup near the operator’s elbow.

A radio snapped once, then went quiet.

Somewhere in the back room, a printer clicked through a stack of reports nobody wanted to read twice.

Then the line opened.

The operator, Mara Ellis, had taken enough calls to know that panic had many shapes.

Some callers screamed.

Some whispered.

Some became strangely polite because shock had put manners where terror should have been.

This call was different.

There was no adult voice.

No footsteps pounding across a floor.

No television in the background.

Only the brush of fabric against a phone and a child breathing as if she had been told not to make a sound.

Mara sat straighter.

“911, what’s happening, sweetheart?” she asked.

The silence after her question was not empty.

It had weight.

Then, faintly, wood scraped somewhere behind the child.
