A Girl Dug Through Trash While Grandma Toasted In The Ballroom-mdue

Michael Rivas did not expect to find his daughter in the alley behind the Imperial Hotel.

He had come through the service entrance because he hated the front of that place on event nights.

The chin was Sarah’s.

The eyes were his.

“Daddy,” she whispered.

The alley seemed to narrow around him.

“Emma?”

She did not run to him.

That was the first thing that broke him.

She stood there with the bread in one dirty hand, shame all over her face, as if she had been the one caught doing something wrong.
