Behind him, Lieutenant Colonel Harrison stood with a tablet tucked under one arm.

Behind Harrison, a red-faced major smiled like he had walked into the best show on base.

I had seen men smile that way before.

Usually they smiled right before they learned the room was not theirs.

“You’re either a fraud,” Matthews said, “or somebody on this base has been handing out fairy tales as decorations.”

A few soldiers shifted.
